University of Exeter Students’ Guild

We worked together with Arque building contractors to deliver a well overdue refurbishment of the Students’ Guild offices at Streatham campus at the University of Exeter.

The staff at the Students’ Guild requested a number of things for the new office space. They wanted a forward-thinking, and modern aesthetic that would encourage and improve communication. This re-design has also provided the University staff with a comfortable and inspiring area.

The scheme has a calming palette featuring natural colours and materials, which keep it fresh and fun, with emphasis placed on the communal collaborative and breakout areas. We added interest in the form of digital wallpaper, and custom-designed feature light fitting, which has brought in a strong essence of nature and in turn a restful atmosphere.

We brought in a strong essence of nature created a restful atmosphere, through the use of natural and raw material colours to finish walls, and create features which also make for engaging spaces.

The offices were opened up and furniture and acoustic partitions used to define spaces and create zones.

The flooring was reinvented with a custom pattern formed from a mixture of plank tiles resembling pebbles and bark texture which was very calming for office areas, and a green accent tile which was concentrated in the communal areas to add interest and a bit of colour.

Natural patterns of branches were introduced into suspended acoustic screens and the custom pendant lights over the breakfast bar and collaborative table.

Walls have been brightened with accent colours of calm green for office areas and a light terracotta in collaborative and communal spaces. This was implemented along with digital wallpaper using tropical green wall imagery and emphasised with trailing plants to bring even more greenery.

The furniture selection echoed the floor and wall colours in the task seating, desk dividers, meeting chairs and booth seating, bringing the scheme together perfectly.

The end result is an unusual contemporary office space that encourages creativity and communication, that the Student’s Guild staff will feel happy and at home in.
